HACWN Fall Conference

November 12 - 14, 2009

WORKSHOPS

Here are some of the great offerings you can choose from:

Coaching Classes:

Thursday:

Critique class (Susan Titus Osborn) -- This will be an informal hands-on workshop with class discussion and critiquing. Bring your manuscript, be prepared to read it, and get feedback. Limited to maximum of eight conferees.

Overflow critique classes will be led by other editors and professional writers.

Beginners class(Carmen Leal) – where to start and what to do with what you’ll learn at this conference. How to begin the process of writing for the publishing world.

Friday:

1. Crafting Your Book Proposal(Mary Ann Jeffrey) – Everything about writing a book proposal, fiction or nonfiction. What to include; what to leave out. How to present your project in the best way possible so that an agent or publisher will be hooked or at least ask to see the entire manuscript.

2. Where to Begin(Susan Titus Osborn) - This class will teach all the basics needed to write your first article or short story. You will learn how to format a manuscript to the editor's specifications and how to market.

3. The Complete Guide to Magazine Writing(Holly Miller) – everything you need to know to successfully pitch, write, market, and sell magazine articles. From a legend in the industry.

4. The Publishing Process from A to Z(Ken Sidey) -- how a book proposal has to gain acceptance from not only editor, but also marketing, sales, execs, promotions people. All that’s involved in taking a book from idea to print.

5. Twenty Steps to the Successful Novel…(Part 1) (Alton Gansky) … and Ten Reasons Why Novels Fail
. In this session, Alton takes the student on a journey through the fiction writing process demonstrating what must be done and pointing out the literary landmines that prevent publication.

Saturday:

1. Writing Nonfiction Books(Ken Sidey) -- This seminar will teach you to structure your nonfiction book and will include focus, fiction techniques, editing, and fine-tuning. Rights and copyright law, contract negotiations, income tax, and marketing the finished product will also be covered.

2 Tent-Making Writing(Carmen Leal) -- While you’re waiting to be an overnight success you still need to pay the bills. Discover untapped ways to earn money while using your writing skills. From travel to technical, or back cover copy to annual reports, there are many ways to bring in consistent income. This is an interactive brainstorming session you will not want to miss if you are looking for tent-making money to supplement or even replace your current writing income.

3. Twenty Steps to the Successful Novel…(Part 2) (Alton Gansky) … and Ten Reasons Why Novels Fail.
In this session, Alton takes the student on a journey through the fiction writing process demonstrating what must be done and pointing out the literary landmines that prevent publication.

4. Magazine Article Clinic(Andy Scheer) -- What traits mark a healthy article (and where do submissions often fall short)? In this hands-on, interactive session, we’ll use overhead transparencies to examine articles submitted in advance by class members — analyzing articles’ strengths and pointing to specific ways to address shortcomings. We’ll begin with big-picture concerns — such as topic, theme, and audience — before zooming in to consider articles’ components and the writing style

5. Writing for Children(Jesse Florea) -- (For both beginners and experienced writers who can bring manuscripts for group critique.) You’ll look at the children's market a little. Who is the audience? What are they interested in? Age compression. Then you’ll see the different types of stories relevant to their needs. What's the proper tone or voice. We'll talk about the importance of leads, write some leads, rewrite some leads. Then we'll take some time to critique participants' stories as a group. Finally, we'll talk about passion and why it's so important to write from your passion to children.
