HACWN Fall Conference

November 12 - 14, 2009

- Do you want success in your writing work and ministry?

- Want to make connections with an editor and meet others who can help you along the way?

- Want to follow Ephesians 3:20-21and see God do "more than you can ask or think?"

You’ll find all this and more! Check out our stellar faculty. Combined, they have decades of experience, and they’re eager to share their expertise with you!

This year we’re excited to offer more in-depth teaching through Coaching Classes (see brochure) that feature two and a half hours of instruction and feedback to help you get to the next level in your writing. Then, each night, you can enjoy a keynote session with seasoned editors, and editor introductions. And each afternoon will be filled with two dozen workshops and electives designed to meet your needs -- and time to meet with editors for feedback and pitching ideas..

CONNECT WITH PROFESSIONALS!

FREE APPOINTMENTS:

At the conference, you’ll be able to sign up for a free appointment with a faculty member to show him or her your manuscript, pitch an idea, or talk to him or her about your writing. Sign up is at the conference on a first-come, first-served basis. You can also chat with faculty members and others about your ideas at lunch, coffee breaks, and other times!

PAID CRITIQUES and FIRST PAGES:

Many writers wonder about the value of extras like paid critiques and
first pages at a writer's conference. I have personally used these
services many times and find them one of the greatest benefits of a
conference. In both, you will hear what a live editor says about your
writing and he or she will give you direct feedback that is
invaluable and most helpful. At recent conferences that I have
attended usually as a speaker or a teacher, I have paid for as many
as six paid critiques just to see what I'm missing on problematic
material. If you're sending out something and getting rejections all
over, you may want try this out. It's relatively inexpensive and can
be extremely helpful in narrowing down what you need to do to fix a
piece. I recommend these, and if you have more than one project, I
recommend that you do as many as you can afford. Nothing else will
give you the direct feedback you need. Also, if you have an editor
look at something, there's always the possibility that they will say,
"I'd like to take this back with me to our pub group." That's a real
bonus, and I've had it happen in ways that have led to the
publication of articles and whole books.

How do they work? WIth a paid critique, you send in your article,
poem, or book proposal (only 10-12 pages, double-spaced max). It's
best to send it as an attached document, but you can mail it if you
wish. The editor, agent, or author will read it ahead of time and
write comments on it. Then you will meet with that person at the
conference for twenty-minutes where they'll give you all the details
and you'll have a chance to ask questions. This costs $35.00 per
submission.

With "first pages," you send in the first page (double-space, no more
than 250 words) to me at HACWN. You can send it as an attachment
(preferred) or regular mail. It costs $10.00 for each entry. At the
conference, a panel of editors, agents, and experts will sit on the
stage. I will read the page to the panel and then whoever wishes will
comment on whether they'd read on or not. That's about it, but it
tells you the crucial things an editor will think as they consider
that page. Most editors and agents can make a decision on a piece by
the end of that page.
