PAID CRITIQUES
and FIRST PAGES:
Many writers wonder
about the value of extras like paid critiques and
first pages at a writer's conference. I have personally
used these
services many times and find them one of the greatest benefits
of a
conference. In both, you will hear what a live editor says
about your
writing and he or she will give you direct feedback that
is
invaluable and most helpful. At recent conferences that
I have
attended usually as a speaker or a teacher, I have paid
for as many
as six paid critiques just to see what I'm missing on problematic
material. If you're sending out something and getting rejections
all
over, you may want try this out. It's relatively inexpensive
and can
be extremely helpful in narrowing down what you need to
do to fix a
piece. I recommend these, and if you have more than one
project, I
recommend that you do as many as you can afford. Nothing
else will
give you the direct feedback you need. Also, if you have
an editor
look at something, there's always the possibility that they
will say,
"I'd like to take this back with me to our pub group."
That's a real
bonus, and I've had it happen in ways that have led to the
publication of articles and whole books.
How do they work? WIth a paid critique,
you send in your article,
poem, or book proposal (only 10-12 pages, double-spaced
max). It's
best to send it as an attached document, but you can mail
it if you
wish. The editor, agent, or author will read it ahead of
time and
write comments on it. Then you will meet with that person
at the
conference for twenty-minutes where they'll give you all
the details
and you'll have a chance to ask questions. This costs $35.00
per
submission.
With "first pages," you
send in the first page (double-space, no more
than 250 words) to me at HACWN. You can send it as an attachment
(preferred) or regular mail. It costs $10.00 for each entry.
At the
conference, a panel of editors, agents, and experts will
sit on the
stage. I will read the page to the panel and then whoever
wishes will
comment on whether they'd read on or not. That's about it,
but it
tells you the crucial things an editor will think as they
consider
that page. Most editors and agents can make a decision on
a piece by
the end of that page.
